WALLINGFORD, Conn. (May 25, 2011) - After a sunny day at The Farms Country Club, Fran Marrello of Canaan Country Club takes home The Spring PGA Stroke Play shooting one-under-par 143 and the exemption to the 2011 Travelers Championship. This will be Marrello’s ninth appearance in the event having competed in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 2001, 2002, and 2006. Marrello has never made the cut but his low round at the Travelers Championship is 70.
Marrello was the only player in the field to finish under par today and was four shot clear of his nearest competitor, Billy Street of New Haven County Club. Street was tied for the overnight lead with Marrello, but shot four-over-par 76 today and finished with 147, good enough for a solo second place. Paul Barsley of Race Brook Country Club also shared the round one lead, but shot five-over-par 77 to finish in a tie for third with Kevin Giancola of Golf Quest with a two day total of 148.
Marrello will take home the first place prize of $1,800.
When asked about playing in the Travelers Championship, Marrello does not plan on doing anything different and said, “I will rely on his experience, its just golf.” |
