Kyle and KJ Lead Lake of Isles Pro-Scratch

Six-Under-Par Holds First Place

NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. (October 24, 2011) - Kyle Bilodeau of The Hartford Golf Club, and amateur partner, KJ Camera lead after the first day of the 2011 Lake of Isles PGA Pro-Scratch. As a team, Bilodeau and Camera shot an impressive six-under-par 66 to lead the second place team of Mike Martin of Clubs To Go, and amateur partner Ryan Leahey, by two strokes at a four-under-par 68. Bilodeau and Camera look to continue their fantastic play tomorrow after carding no bogies on the day. Bilodeau was also able to drive the 18th green and make the putt for eagle to put them two ahead of Martin and Leahey. Tee times for round 2 will begin at 8:30 AM.

Brian Higgins Named 2011 President's Award Recipient

Over $50,000 Raised In Two Years from Hartford Charity Classic

ROCKY HILL, Conn. (October 24, 2011) – Brian Higgins, general manager of The Hartford Golf Club, has been named the recipient of the 2011 President’s Award. The President’s Award is presented annually to a PGA member for exceptional influence towards fund raising during annual PGA campaigns that benefits The Connecticut Section PGA Golf Foundation. However this year, it was awarded to a non-PGA member because of Higgins' contribution to the Foundation In just two short years, his instrumental work in developing the Hartford Charity Classic has raised over $50,000 for the Connecticut PGA Golf Foundation.

Kevin Captures Fourth Match Play Championship

Final Match Won 4&3 Over Gleeton

ORANGE, Conn. (October 20, 2011) – Following five rigorous rounds in the 21st Match Play Championship, Kevin Giancola of Golf Quest Family Sports Center and Tom Gleeton of the Country Club of Waterbury set out today for the final Championship match at Race Brook Country Club. Giancola was victorious being 4 up with 3 holes to play, capturing his fourth match play championship title. His semi-final match earlier this morning over Fran Marrello of Canaan C.C. also solidified him as the 2011 Player of the Year with 328.50 points over Marrello’s 312.75. This is Giancola’s sixth Player of the Year title and third in four years. His incredible short game, sinking key putts and making impressive up and downs, kept Giancola in the hunt in each of his five matches. View More
 

Play Suspended at 21st Match Play Championship

ORANGE, Conn. (October 19, 2011) - After a rainy morning at Race Brook Country Club, play in the 21st Match Play Championship has been suspended until tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM. The match between Tom Gleeton of the Country Club of Waterbury and Tony Kelley of Wyckoff Country Club finished with Gleeton three up with two holes to play. Kevin Giancola of Golf Quest Family Sports Center and Fran Marrello of Canaan Country Club must continue their match in the morning. Giancola currently sits two up through number 13. The winner of this match will not only advance on to the finals against Gleeton but will also earn the points need to be named 2011 Section PGA Player of the Year.

2012 Challenge Cup Team Solidified after Round 3 of Match Play

Kay Plays Way on to Team

ORANGE, Conn. - Tumble Brook C.C. Assistant Professional Bob Kay defeated Greg Farland one up to advance to this afternoon’s quarter finals at the 21st Match Play Championship at Race Brook Country Club. By doing so, Kay moved into the ninth and final spot in the Section PGA Player of the Year standings thereby earning a spot to be on the 2012 PGA Team for the Julius Boros Challenge Cup Matches.

 

Also playing his way onto the team was Dave Dell of Springfield Country Club who defeated John Paesani one up in a match that went into an extra sudden death hole. The other seven (7) players earning a spot on the 2012 team are Fran Marrello, Kevin Giancola, William Street, Adam D’Amario, Tony Kelley, Ed Slattery, and Farland. The two senior spots on the 2012 team have been awarded to Jack McConachie and Paesani.

Six Past Champions Advance to Sweet Sixteen in 21st Match Play Championship

Seven Time Champion, Marrello, Among Them

ORANGE, Conn. (October 17, 2011) - As the first two rounds of the 21st Match Play Championship come to a close at Race Brook C.C., sixteen players still stand including six past Match Play champions. Host PGA Professional and defending Champion, Paul Barnsley began play in the second round after a ‘bye’, pulling out a solid victory of 5&3 over Justin Sigette of Rock Ridge C.C. who had won in the first round earlier in the day 2&1 over Dave DiRico of Crestview C.C. 1993 Champion, Mickey Hawkes of Hawkes Golf Vehicles defeated Jeff DelRosso of Prospect Driving Range 4&3 to continue on to the sweet sixteen. Barnsley and Hawkes face off in the first tee time at 8:00 AM tomorrow morning.

George Connor Named Connecticut Section PGA Teacher of the Year

ROCKY HILL, Conn. – George Connor, Director of Instruction at the Academy of Golf at Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, Conn. has been selected by the Connecticut Section PGA as the 2011 Teacher of the Year. This award was inaugurated in 1986 to honor outstanding teachers of golf where selection is based on overall performance as a teacher, and unusual, innovative, and special programs the professional utilizes, as well as outstanding golfers the professional has instructed.
 
Connor has been a member of The PGA of America for 14 years, first starting his apprenticeship at Longmeadow Country Club. He later gained Class A Membership and became a PGA Assistant Professional there in 1997 moving to The Hartford Golf Club in 1998. In 2008, Connor was offered the Director of Instructor position at the newly formed, Academy of Golf at Gillette Ridge Golf Club and jumped at the chance to build something from the ground up.

Raceway Golf Club Hosts New England Special Olympics

THOMPSON, Conn. (October 12, 2011) - Special Olympic Athletes from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Connecticut descended upon Raceway Golf Club for the 2011 New England Special Olympics. Each Special Olympian competed in a two-person team with a Non-Special Olympian partner in an alternate shot format supported by the Connecticut Section PGA Golf Foundation. Congratualtions to all participants to battled out for bronze, silver, gold medals:

DiRico and Chicopee C.C. Team Capture Mohegan Sun Pro-Am Series Team Championship

New England, Metropolitan and Connecticut Section PGA Professionals and Amateurs Enjoy Fox Hopyard

EAST HADDAM, Conn. (October 11, 2011) – Connecticut Section PGA Professional, Tom DiRico and amateurs Todd Ezold, Mike Trombley and Jim DiRico of Chicopee C.C. fired an impressive sixteen-under-par 126 to grab first place in the two-person best ball Mohegan Sun Pro-Am Series Team Championship at Fox Hopyard Golf Club today. Coming in a close second place was New England Section PGA Professional, Rich Ingraham and amateurs, Rick Moreaum, Mike Bushnell, and Gary Murphy of Sky Meadow C.C. with a fourteen-under 128. Third place was taken by Metropolitan Section PGA Professional, Bill Bresnan and amateurs, Lyle Borman, Andy Hislop, and Jerry Rizza, of Colonial Springs G.C.

Eight Other Special Award Winners Announced

ROCKY HILL, Conn. (October 5, 2011) – The Board of Directors of the Connecticut Section PGA, in conjunction with the Special Awards committee, announces this years’ Golf Professional of the Year, the highest honor bestowed upon a PGA of America member, as Donald F. Gliha of Connecticut Golf Academy in Manchester, Conn. Golf Professional of the Year is awarded for overall performance as a golf professional, leadership, service to his/her Section, the ability to inspire fellow professionals, and the promotion of the game of golf. Gliha will lead the 2011 Special Awards Winners being honored Sunday, November 20, at the Special Awards Banquet at MGM Grand sponsored by Foxwoods Resort Casino, Club Car, and Kirk & Matz.
