PGA of America President to Visit Connecticut for Charity Event

ROCKY HILL, Conn. (July 22, 2011) – The Second Annual Connecticut Section PGA Foundation Charity Golf Classic Presented by Mohegan Sun at Hartford Golf Club, tees off at 12:30 PM on Monday, July 25, with a very special guest in attendance, The 37th PGA of America President, Allen Wronowski. This will be Wronowski’s first visit to the Section since his election last fall. He will serve as the Honorary Chairman of the event, where a field of 120 will play to support the Foundation sponsor initiatives primarily focused on golf for diverse individuals, including women, juniors, and people with disabilities. Four Announced as 2011 Connecticut Section PGA Professional Hall of Fame Inductees

Master PGA Professional Don Gliha to be Inducted on November 20

CROMWELL, Conn. – As a part of the PGA Pro-Officer evening program at TPC River Highlands, four PGA members were announced to as the 2011 inductees into the Connecticut Section PGA Professional Hall of Fame. Joining the elite group is Henry Bontempo, Wally Cichon, Don Gliha, and Joel Smith.
 
Henry Bontempo, PGA was an instrumental Connecticut Section leader in the 1940’s and the 1950’s while also establishing both the Western Massachusetts Tea Party and the Western Massachusetts Chapter of our Section. He was a runner up in the 1952 Connecticut PGA Championship and had many memorable matches and life experiences along side Bobby Jones.

H. Smith Richardson PGA Pro and Officer Shoot Low

CROMWELL, Conn. (July 19, 2011) - A scorching summer day proves good conditions for Mark Farrell and Joe Romanelli of H. Smith Richardson GC during the PGA Pro-Officer at TPC River Highlands. Farrell and Romanelli shot a combined eighteen-under-par 122 to squeak out a victory over second place finishers Jason Waters, PGA and Tim Willerton of Hop Meadow CC with a seventeen-under 123. Third place in the event was taken by Tom Gleeton, PGA and Al Castaldi of The Country Club of Waterbury. Ian Marshall, PGA and John Dufour of Watertown Golf Club won fourth place in a match of cards against Sean Busca, PGA and David Maloney of Clinton CC.

Austin and Kemmling Take Home the Win in the PGA Pro-Junior Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (July 18, 2011) – The Course at Yale proved a challenging test for the 75 Junior Golf Association Members and 25 PGA members playing in the 2011 PGA Pro-Junior Invitational. Eric Austin of Northford, Conn. and Julia Kemmling of Berlin, Conn. were able to rise above the conditions and shoot low. Austin finished with a one-over 72 with one eagle and one birdie on the card. Kemmling initially finished tied with Alyssa Lyon of Easton, Conn. after both firing a ten-over 81 taking the tournament to a playoff.

24 Section Professionals Vying for Connecticut Open Title

ROCKY HILL, Conn. (July 15, 2011) - The field is set for the 77th Connecticut Open held July 25-27 at Brooklawn Country Club that includes 24 Connecticut Section PGA Professionals. Many of PGA Professionals are playing the best golf of their lives including Fran Marrello of Canaan Country Club. This year, Marrello won the PGA Spring Stroke Play to earn a spot into the Travelers Championship, the 60th Connecticut Senior PGA Championship, and tied for second in this week's 29th Connecticut Senior Open. Incidentally, Marrello has never won the Connecticut Open title. It is the only Connecticut major missing from his resume.

Eric Clark Leaving Connecticut Section PGA after 4 Years

ROCKY HILL, Conn. (July 14, 2011) – Eric Clark, who began employment with the Connecticut Section PGA in April of 2007 and then promoted to Tournament Program Director in 2008, will be leaving us on July 29. Clark has taken a new position with U.S. Food Service as territory manager and will begin with training on August 1, out of Norwich, Conn.

 

“Eric has been an invaluable member of our team for over four years, and the relationships he has fostered with our professional membership, sponsors, golf industry allies, and customers cannot be easily replaced or duplicated,” said Tom Hantke, executive director of the Connecticut PGA.But more than anything, he will be sorely missed by his fellow staff members who will hold special and cherished memories of the close working relationship and bonds we formed.”

First Sudden Death Play Off at Fairview Farm Junior Golf Tournament

HARWINTON, Conn. (July 14, 2011) – A windy day in the Hills of Northwest Connecticut led to a difficult round and a lot of tough tee shots for our junior competitors at fourth Junior Golf TOUR event of the summer at Fairview Farms. In the girls 9-Hole division Emma Heim of Suffield, Conn. shot a 45 to win. For the boys, Noah Peterson of East Longmeadow, Mass and Ryan Levy of Trumbull, Conn. each shot a 40 but the top position was awarded to Noah after a matching card tie breaker.

2010 JGA Player of the Year and Current Point Leader Wins CSGA Junior Amateur

WATERTOWN, Conn. (July 14, 2011) - Thursday marked a special day for Junior Golf Association's 2010 Player of the Year and current point leader for the 2011 Season. John Flaherty of Cromwell, Conn. won CSGA's 70th Connecticut Junior Amateur at Watertown Golf Club.

 

Flaherty from TPC River Highlands clawed his way back from a three-down deficit through four holes to win the 70th Connecticut Junior Amateur in twenty-one holes over Brian Butler from Wampanoag Country Club.

Fisher Finishes Five Under Par to Take the 29th Connecticut PGA Championship Title

GROTON, Conn. (July 12, 2011) – Lloyd Fisher of Grand Rapids, Mich. shoots 71-66 for a five-under-par 137 winning the 29th Connecticut Senior Open. Three other players finished at even par or better for the tournament. Gerard Courville of Stratford, Conn. birdied the par 5, 18th to go three-under and snag the runner up spot. James Becker of Bloomfield, Conn. took third with a total of one-under, 141 for third and defending champion David Szewczul of Farmington, Conn. shot 73-69 for 142 to finish even for the tournament and take the fourth spot. Courville and Waddington Lead the 29th Connecticut Senior Open at Two-Under Par

GROTON, Conn. (July 11, 2011) – After round one in the 29th Connecticut Senior Open at Shennecossett Golf Course, Gerard Courville, 2009 Champion of Stratford, Conn. and Derek Waddington of Hebron, Conn. share the lead, both firing two-under 69. Following at a one-under with scores of 70 are James Becker of Bloomfield, Conn., Fran Marrello, PGA of Plymouth, Conn., John McPhee of Waccabuc, N.Y.and Bob Kay, PGA of West Hartford, Conn.
